Friends Make Us Better

"As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend." ~ Proverbs 27:17 (ESV)

I took this shot recently and spent several hours post processing to come up with a couple images that I was pretty pleased with. I then asked a photographer friend to offer me some constructive criticism. This friend, Harold Davis, is an amazing photographer, artist, and author so I wanted him to be honest so that I could learn and grow. I took some of his advice and reprocessed the image to come up with something I think is far better than my previous attempts. It's nice to have friends like this that are willing to be honest and help improve our skills.

We all need friends in life to come along side us and "sharpen" us. They do this by being open and honest with us. The Scripture says that we are to "speak the truth in love" to one another. This is very important because sometimes we look at our lives and are satisfied with the way things are, but a true friend can come along and offer some insight that can help us rise to another level.

Who has God placed in your life to help "sharpen" you? Are you open and listening to what they have to say? Are you the kind of friend who will be honest and seek to bring out the very best in your friends?

Publish His Mercy To The World

"Put your ear down to the burdened, agonized heart of humanity, and listen to its pitiful wail for help. Go stand by the gates of hell, and hear the damned entreat you to go to their father’s house and bid their brothers and sisters and servants and masters not to come there. Then look Christ in the face—whose mercy you have professed to obey—and tell him whether you will join heart and soul and body and circumstances in the march to publish his mercy to the world." –William Booth

"Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. ~ John 4:35 (ESV)

Kaweah River Bridge ~ Built In 1923

Valentine Dream Bridge, originally uploaded by Calpastor.

Ecclesiastes 1:9–11 (ESV) ~ "What has been is what will be,
and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Is there a thing of which it is said, “See, this is new”? It has been already in the ages before us. There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of later things yet to be among those who come after."

Kathy and I enjoyed our Valentine's Day on Mineral King Road just north of Sequoia National Park. The weather was absolutely fabulous making it possible to remove the doors from the Jeep and travel the steep winding road enjoying the fresh air and catch glass-free views of the majestic Sierras. We are surrounded by so much beauty!

I was particularly interested in this amazing bridge built in 1923. I couldn't stop thinking about the fact that the bridge was built almost 90 years ago and is still standing today. The bridge continues to carry travelers across the Kaweah River on it's winding descent from the high sierras into Kaweah Lake (Terminus Reservoir).

Sometimes I think we have a crazy prejudice toward all things "old". We are quick to throw things out that have served and continue to serve us well. I think that just as much as we should keep an open mind towards "new" things we should also keep an open mind towards "old" things. Not everything in church, business, politics, home, etc. needs to be dismantled and replaced. Even when the time comes to change, will the "new" really be all that new?

Cats At Church

"A cat may go to a monastery, but she still remains a cat" - Ethiopian proverb

I believe I've met a few cats in the church over the years and I would tend to agree with the Ethiopian proverb... While the church may not change our nature, Christ does!

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come." ~ 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)

A Fountain Of Blessing

Mayor's Park Fountain, originally uploaded by Calpastor.

"Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you. Rejoice in the wife of your youth." ~ Proverbs 5:18 (NLT)

This lovely fountain is found in Mayor's Park, Main Street Visalia, CA. It was there, in 1985, that I proposed to the most beautiful woman on the planet. She truly has been a "fountain of blessing" to me.
