A "Welcome" Atmoshere

562773842_07c919cc9b_m_3 I hope all the fathers out there were spoiled yesterday. I was, but I'm treated pretty good all the time. We had great services. Scott Myer did a great job singing a song I had never heard before, "Watching You". It had a very good message for dads. I loved Scott and Noah's shirts this week. Made me want to stand and salute.

I was thinking during the music portion of our worship about what makes a "Welcome Atmosphere" at a church. I came up with an acrostic that I'm going to develop further, but i thought I would share it with you now. Sometimes it helps me think things through when I just write them out...

WELCOME

  • W = Warm and Fuzzy, You know that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you have done something good. That emotional feeling that you get when you have taken your children somewhere and they have really enjoyed themselves and got something good. I think our church should make moms and dads walk away with a warm fuzzy feeling about taking their kids to church.
  • E = Energy, The worship service should be energy filled. The music should be exciting. The atmosphere should be charged with energy. Church members should be rested up for Sunday morning so they don't come dragging in to church. Wake up! Down some coffee!
  • L = Laughter, Laughter is contagious and it just makes you feel so much better. I know there is a time and a place for everything but i like to laugh and have a good time at church. Christians should be the happiest people on earth. The New Testament Christians were accused of being drunk but of course it was the Holy Spirit not wine. If we're going to be accused of being drunks, let's at least be happy drunks.
  • C = Compassion, Compassion is what people need when they come to church. Jesus saw the multitudes and was moved with compassion. Have you ever been to the Emergency Room and had the doctors and nurses stand around and tell you how stupid you were for getting hurt or being sick? Why do some Christians want to level criticism rather than love with compassion?
  • O = Opportunity, People coming to our church need to know that there is an opportunity there for them. They need to be able to find a place to fit in and be a part of what God is doing. A welcome atmosphere is one in which people can feel at home, like part of the family, and then become a part of the ministry.
  • M = Mission, A mission is very important to make people feel welcome. Our mission is so large that there will always be a need for more to get involved. People need to know that there is a purpose for our church. That God has a plan and a reason for our church.
  • E = Encouragement, The world around us can be very discouraging and so the church needs to be a place of encouragement. We must speak the truth in love. We must be honest about everything but also speak words of encouragement. With God all things are possible. When people leave the church on Sunday mornings they should feel encouraged.

There you have it. The beginnings of something maybe. I would love to hear your thoughts, comments, ideas.

Young Adults Road Trip

We had a great time on our first Young Adults Road Trip this weekend. We visited Bayside Church in Granite Bay then went to Sonic Drive-in for burgers. We had 8 young adults make the trip and it was a blast to hangout with these guys.

Josh, our resident guitar and bass player at Harvest took the time to share some dating tips with the rest of the group. Fortunately, someone had a camera and was able to capture this moment for future generations.

Why Do Little Girls Have To Grow Up?

Patricia and Beth, originally uploaded by CalPastor.

My oldest daughter Beth (on the right) is soon to be 19 and I have to be honest I hate that she is growing up. She just gets more beautiful every day, inwardly and outwardy. It just seems like yesterday I was pushing her on the swings. I'm very proud of the young lady that she has become. It's strange when your children become adults. She will always be my little girl, but now that she is an adult she is also a good friend. I love spending time with her. I have to battle with the Evil Knight (Her boyfriend Kyle) to get time with her these days but it's worth fighting for.

OK, So I'm bragging on one of my kids! It's my BLOG! I can do that if I want to.

:)

We Need More Male Models In The Church

Zoolander_001_copyThis past week, Kathy and I went to PANERA BREAD in Vacaville one morning to pray and plan. We were both doing our thing in the scriptures. I let out a frustrated sigh and said, "This is ticking me off!". I have been reading about King David and his mighty men and it is very good stuff, but I was getting frustrated trying to figure out who the three were, the thirty were, who the commanders were, the captains, and the chiefs. It was early and I had only had one cup of coffee.

She lovingly looked at me and asked, "What's wrong?" I explained. She then asked very inquisitively, "So, you're mad at the Bible?" "Yes...kind of...it's just confusing me right now". She looks at me, touches my hand gently, looks me in the eyes, and says, "You do know that God wrote that book, right?" I excused myself to go retrieve another cup of coffee.

ANYWAY...

Then the spirit came upon Amasai, [who was] chief of the captains, [and he said], Thine [are we], David, and on thy side, thou son of Jesse: peace, peace [be] unto thee, and peace [be] to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. Then David received them, and made them captains of the band. (1 Chronicles 12:18 KJV)

The English Standard Version reads, "The Spirit of the Lord clothed Amasai, chief of the thirty..."

What does it look like to be clothed with the Spirit of the Lord? I'm sure we would all look much better dressed in the Holy Spirit! Clothing does several things for us. Clothes cover our imperfections and make us look better. I'm all for covering up this earthly vessel. Clothes protect us from the elements keeping us warm when the world around is is cold and covered when the sun beats down on us. Only in the Garden of Eden would the environment have been gentle enough for this wimp to run around exposed. Clothes also keep this world a lot more um...um...CLEAN! LESS GROSS! We'll just leave it at that.

Being clothed with the Holy Spirit does the same things for us on a spiritual level. When we are clothed with the Holy Spirit our imperfections just don't seem to stand out as bad. They are still there, but the Holy Spirit does such a great job of covering. When we are clothed with the Holy Spirit we are kept warm when the world around us is hot or cold. We are insulated by the Holy Spirit. When we are clothed with the Holy Spirit the world is just a cleaner, less sickening place. God please clothe us today with your Holy Spirit.

What do these clothes look like? Look at Amasai after he is clothed buy the Spirit of the Lord.

  1. He is COMMITTED, "THINE ARE WE" he says to David. I'm convinced that when people are covered with the Holy Spirit they have no problem being committed. Committed to Christ. Committed to one another. Committed to the Church. Committed!
  2. He is COOPERATIVE, "On thy side" he tells David. When we are clothed with the Holy Spirit we are willing to work with and for the Lord. We cooperate with Him to fulfill His great commission. Jesus said that we would either be "with him" or "against him".
  3. He is CONSIDERATE, "Peace be unto thee, and peace be to thine helpers". When people are covered in the Holy Spirit they not only love the KING, they love HIS helpers. John said we CANNOT love God and hate our brothers.

If we want to be mighty men, like the men that helped David ascend to his throne, then we must be clothed with the Spirit of the Lord. Let's all be models of the Holy Spirit's line of clothing!

(Someone just asked if the picture in this post was me without a beard...WHAT? I'm not sure quite how to take that, but for the record it is Ben Stiller's character, Zoolander)

Young Adults Road Trip

Soniclogooff_2Our young adult's are off on a road trip this Saturday at 4:00 p.m. We'll be headed to Sacramento to visit Bayside Church. We'll hit the Bayside Cafe for Starbucks, Worship with Lincoln Brewster, take in a great message, and then enjoy dinner at Sonic.

Our Young Adults Fellowship meets on Tuesday nights at 8:30 p.m. We are currently meeting at the new Round Table Pizza in American Canyon. God has blessed Harvest with some really great young people. It is exciting to watch them grow. Google_logo

I'm exploring Google lately. I'm trying out the IGoogle page as my homepage. It's really cool and let's you choose the content. I'm also trying the GMail and so far I like it a lot. Finally, I added a Harvest Church calendar to this blog. Check it out! Let me know what you think. If you have Google Calendar (It's Free) you can import events right into your own calendar.

I'm Cheering For This Dude!

DarrenbarbaraDarren and his mother Barbara came to Harvest at the invitation of one our trustee board members, Scott Hanes. They have both given their lives to Christ and are continuing to grow in their relationship with the Lord. They are truly a breath of fresh air to this pastor and this church.

Darren is graduating and going off to school to study culinary arts! I'm so jazzed! I'm thinking...future Culinary Pastor? OK! So I'm dreaming a little there. Darren is also a very talented golfer! I have not even attempted to play with him. Maybe he could be our Links Pastor? Whatever he decides to pursue, I'm sure God will continue to bless his life.

Congratulations Darren! Don't forget! Behind every great man is a great woman! You've done an excellent job Barbara!

Building Crew or Wrecking Crew?

10 little Christians standing in line.
1 disliked the preacher, then there were 9.

9 little Christians stayed up very late.
1 overslept Sunday, then there were 8.

8 little Christians on their way to Heaven.
1 took the low road and then there were 7.

7 little Christians chirping like chicks.
1 disliked music, then there were 6.

6 little Christians seemed very much alive,
but one lost his interest then there was 5.

5 little Christians pulling for Heaven's Shore,
but one stopped to rest, then there were 4

4 little Christians each busy as a bee.
1 got his feelings hurt, then there were 3

3 little Christians knew not what to do.
1 joined the sporty crowd, then there were 2

2 little Christians, our rhyme is nearly done,
differed with each other, then there was 1

1 little Christian can't do much 'tis true,
brought his friend to bible study, then there were 2

2 earnest Christians, each won one more.
That doubled the number, then there were 4

4 sincere Christians worked early and late.
Each won another then there were 8

8 splendid Christians if they doubled as before.
In just so many Sundays, we'd have 1,024

In this little jingle, there is a lesson true,
you belong either to the building or to the wrecking crew!

Sacramento Weekend

Sacramento River Night

God is Good!

  • American Canyon Christian Academy 2007 Formal was aboard the Riverboat Delta King. This is a murder mystery theater show. They had a blast and then enjoyed a Limo-Bus for 4 or 5 hours afterward.
  • I had the privilege of visiting Bayside Church in Roseville to hear Ray Johnston speak on Saturday night. Lincoln Brewster lead worship and it was off the hook! I just needed to be preached at tonight.
  • Took a few photographs on the way home! I took this shot from another drawbridge. I had to run for my life shortly after taking this photograph. An alarm sounded and a speaker announced the bridge I was standing on was being raised. I survived. Barely. :)
  • This was a great week for blogging! My friend Cliff Donoho from Rejoice Church, Nashville sent me a nice note with a Starbuck's Gift Card inside. Cliff is a great pastor and leader! Feel free to follow his lead in regards to this kind gesture! :)
  • I also got a note from a member of a photography forum I frequent. She was curious about my user name and Googled me! Google directed her to THIS POST which touched her since she has a burden for a friend who claims to be an atheist. It made me feel good to know God used my blog to encourage someone!

Starbuckscard_3What a great way to wrap up the week! Sunday looks like it will be a great start for the new week! It will start with a Grande Non-Fat One Sweet-n-Low Latte and just get better and better from there. THANKS "RAMBO" DONOHO!
